From Sandbox to Reality: Timing and Strategies for Transition
Abstract: At the start of the (BSc) studies, we always teach students in a sandboxed way, eliminating external factors and guarding them from random influence. At the end of the studies (at least after the MSc), however, we expect them to join the workforce and be able to participate in teamwork in real situations right away. When is the right moment to start switching from sandbox to real-life setups, and what is the right/good way to do so? PBL/CBL/SDL/…? Right off the bat at year one, or only at the graduation? As a separate study unit (internship) or integrated? Should we do it at all? Should we differentiate among learner types? (e.g., at our MSc, students with HBO BSc diploma + premaster are not allowed to do MSc-level internship because we consider all those learning goals already reached by them) What qualifications should the teachers of such real-life study units have? (i.e., should they have seen some real life themselves before?)
